As the pandemic effects are now waning off, many companies have asked employees to join back from office. In a bid to cater with remote work, TikTok is using an app to track in-office attendance. This month, the company implemented a new internal software called MyRTO (My return to office). According to a report by the New York Times, MyRTO tracks badge swipes which are made when employees enter the office premises. Employees are expected to explain any sort of “deviation.” The badge swipe data will be analysed by employee supervisors and HR staff. As per the new mandate, it requires the US employees to work from office at least thrice a week. Some employees are also required to work from the office for an entire five days.

The employees were warned that “any deliberate and consistent disregard may result in disciplinary action.” Also, it could impact their performance reviews.
Some members of the staff have also voiced their “frustration and dismay” over the attendance policy. One employee spoke to The New York Times on the condition of anonymity. He claimed that the app “threats of punishment were unnecessary, and that colleagues were now fearful about the consequences of failing to comply.”
In response, a TikTok spokesperson claimed, “The ultimate goal of MyRTO is to provide greater clarity and context to both employees and leaders regarding their RTO expectations and in-office schedules, and help foster more transparent communications.”
TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance and it employs around 7,000 people in the US.
