Ishan Kishan took a shine to rookie Tanveer Sangha in the first T20I between India and Australia as he took the legspinner to the cleaners en route to a quickfire half-century.
Ishan belted 29 runs off the 11 deliveries he faced from Sangha that included three sixes and two fours in the chase of 209 on Thursday night in front of a packed stadium.
He made 58 off 39, becoming Sangha’s first victim of the contest.
Ishan was part of India’s ODI World Cup campaign and he played in the first two games before being replaced by Shubman Gill in the playing XI.
The 25-year-old utilised that time to work on his game and ability to take the game deep.
“I think this goes a little back when we were playing World Cup and I was not playing those matches. So the practice sessions, I asked myself what is important for me right now, what I could do. I practiced a lot in the nets. I was talking to my coaches about everything, about the game, how to take the game deep, or how to target those bowlers,” Ishan told reporters after India’s two-wicket win.
He then revealed his plan to target Sangha in particular in the mammoth chase with India needing to score quickly to keep up with the asking rate.
“At the same time, being a lefty batsman and a legspinner bowling, I know how the wicket was because I kept for 20 overs. It was very much needed when you are chasing a total like 209. You need to take a bowler, target bowlers whom you can hit. Like I said before the communication was very important in the middle,” Ishan said.
“I had a chat with Surya (Suryakumar Yadav) bhai also that I’m going to take on this guy wherever he bowls because we need to get the runs and the balls close. Because you can’t give too many runs to the back-end batsman also it won’t be for them to straight away come and play those big shots. I had to take my chances and I believed in myself what I’ve done in my practice sessions and that was very much when you have to go on for big shots,” he added.
