'He Could've Scored a Double Century': India Legend's Blistering Take on Shubman Gill Despite Century
Shubman Gill has been in remarkable form this year having peeled off five ODI centuries so far and is also the leading run-getter in the format too.

Shubman Gill has been the most in-form batter in ODIs this year and will certainly be the key to India’s chances at the world cup. He has been a cut above the rest with a whopping 1230 runs from just 20 innings in ODIs in 2023 and the next best on the list is by Asif Khan of UAE who has 934 runs from 24 innings.

On Sunday, he produced another sublime hundred, his fifth of the year and sixth overall, to help India to a mammoth total of 399/5 against Australia in Indore.

Gill scored 104 off 97 with six fours and four sixes.

However, former India opener Virender Sehwag reckons that the stunning form Gill is in, he should fully capitalise on it and not just get satisfied with a century.

Sehwag advises the opener to convert them into daddy hundreds since he’s young and recovery from a long innings won’t be an issue considering his young age.

“When you have good form, don’t let it go,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.  “When he (Gill) was dismissed, there were still 15 overs left. Gill would have faced maybe 60-odd balls, he could have scored a double century. Rohit Sharma has three double-centuries in ODIs. There was a player Virender Sehwag who also scored a double century at this ground.”

Former India cricketer Rohan Gavaskar agreed with Sehwag and added, “The best part of batting is when you have already scored a hundred. Then you can really enjoy, you are free of tension. Shubman had this chance.”

Sehwag further added that since India were already in a comfortable spot, Gill could have taken his time.

“Nobody asks you to play quickly (once you have reached century). You knew at least 370-380 will be the (final) total. So you can easily take time. Captain came and hit a six. So if he had played longer, could have scored a big score – be it Shreyas Iyer or Shubman Gill. However, no doubt it was a fantastic innings and I hope he will keep entertaining us in the future too,” Sehwag said.

The score was beyond Australia’s reach as they were bowled out for 217 with India winning by 99 runs to take a 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

Meanwhile, Gill has reportedly been rested from the third ODI which will be played on Wednesday in Rajkot.
