IIT-Madras Sets-up Institute Advisory Board to Help it Attain Global Recognition
IIT-Madras has been ranked as the best Indian institutes by the government's NIRF ranking for five years in a row. Now, it aims to be part of the best institutes across the world.

With am aim to emerge as one of the top educational and research institutes across the globe, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has set-up an ‘Institute Advisory Board’ (IAB). This board, claims the IIT, will guide on “the best global practices followed by renowned international institutions” with the college administration and help it perform better globally.

IIT-Madras has been ranked as the best Indian institutes by the government’s NIRF ranking for five years in a row. Now, it aims to be part of the best institutes across the world. Dr. Pawan Goenka, Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT-Madras, said, “We would request this Board to help us define bold strategic goals for the Institute and to help us go beyond what we think is reasonable and achievable today.”

The Board will suggest IIT-Madras several plans and help devise a plan of action for plans suggested under the ‘Institution of Eminence’ (IoE) project of the Government of India. Under the IOE project, the government offers financial assistance of up to Rs 1,000 crore, over a period of five years to the institute for plans to make it one of the best at a global level.

Acceleration of research programmes, establishment and growth of world-class research centres, encouragement of innovation and entrepreneurship, and recruitment of top faculty members and students from across the world, among others will be focus areas of the Board.

Board will also help IIT-Madras in continuing to raise an endowment of Rs. 2,000 crore, connecting faculty and students with internationally acclaimed researchers, and strengthen industry connections with the institute.

The Board comprises eminent alumni and well-wishers from across the world. The members are drawn from various fields including business, academia, and philanthropy.

Murugappan, former Chairman, Murugappa Group, Shri Rahul Mehta, Founder, Mehta Family Foundation, US,  D. Chandrasekhar, Founder and President, Madras Dyslexia Association, Prem Watsa, Founder Chairman and Chief Executive of Fairfax Financial Holdings, Canada, Gururaj ‘Desh’ Deshpande, Co-founder, Sycamore Networks Internet Equipment Manufacturer, Girish Reddy, founder and Managing Partner of Prisma Capital Partners, US, and Member, Board of Trustees, Cornell University, US, Senapathy ‘Kris’ Gopalakrishnan, Chairman, Axilor Ventures, Bengaluru, V.
