Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan fractured his left index finger while batting against Sri Lanka in an ICC Cricket World Cup match on Monday. The injury means he will miss his team’s ninth and final league match of the competition.
Shakib copped a blow to his finger during the early part of his innings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
He took painkillers and wrapped the finger with supportive tape and continued to bat playing a vital role in Bangladesh’s three-wicket win.

“Shakib was struck on his left index finger early in his innings but continued to bat with supportive taping and painkillers,” Bangladesh team Physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said.
“He underwent an emergency X-ray in Delhi after the game which confirmed the fracture on the left PIP joint. Recovery is estimated at three to four weeks. He will leave for Bangladesh today to begin his rehab,” he added.
Shakib scored a superb 65-ball 82 while stitching a big partnership of 169 runs with top-scorer Najmul Shanto (90) for the third wicket to set the base for a successful chase of 280.
Bangladesh are out of semi-final contention having lost six of their eight matches so far.
Their next target is to ensure a top-eight finish which will help them qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
With their second win, Bangladesh have taken their points tally to four and are currently seventh in the standings.
“I think today’s match will give us confidence,” Shakib said after the match. “This will calm a little in the dressing room. The noise will be reduced a little. This will help us play better. But Australia obviously is a very good team. The way they played cricket until now, they are one of the contenders. Today’s match was good. But if we can keep it up, maybe we can play a better match. We have the belief, this win would help us a lot for that.”
Sri Lanka will face Australia next.
