The Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka face-off in Delhi was expected to be a dead rubber until Angelo Mathews was given timed-out following an appeal made by opposition skipper Shakib al Hasan. Something of that sort had happened for the first time in the history of international cricket, leading to unending criticism for the Bangladesh captain who had no regrets on his move.
Shakib’s refusal to withdraw the Timed Out appeal against Mathews has not gone down well with the latter’s family. In a conversation with Deccan Chronicle, Trevis Mathews, brother of the veteran Sri Lankan all-rounder, said Shakib will no more be welcomed in Sri Lanka.

“We are very disappointed. The Bangladeshi captain has no sportsman spirit and did not show humanity in the gentleman’s game," Angelo’s brother, Trevin Mathews was quoted as saying by Deccan Chronicle.
“Shakib is not welcome in Sri Lanka. If he comes here to play any international or the LPL matches, stones will be thrown at him or he will have to face the annoyance of fans," he added.
The incident has led to an unending debate, with people largely speaking of the spirit of the game. Addressing a press conference after the conclusion of the game, Shakib said it was unfortunate but well within the rules.
The Bangladesh captain was then asked what would he have done if he had been in Mathews’ place. Shakib had a straightforward answer – “I’ll be careful. It doesn’t happen to me."
On the other hand, Mathews explained his case and stressed on the fact that he made his crease on time but faced an ‘equipment malfunction’ in the middle at the last moment.
“I haven’t done anything wrong. I had two minutes to get to the crease and get myself ready, which I did. And then it was an equipment malfunction. And I don’t know where the common sense went. It’s disgraceful from Shakib and Bangladesh if they want to play cricket like that stooped down to that level I think there’s something wrong drastically," Mathews said.
Umpire Informed Angelo Mathews of Timed-out Danger Before Helmet Issue
According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, umpire Richard Illingworth told Mathews he had 30 seconds left to be ready to face when he walked into bat, before the helmet malfunction took place.
While the Sri Lankan slammed the match officials that there was an equipment malfunction because of which the delay happened, the umpires were forced to go by the rulebook as ICC’s playing conditions claim a batsman must be ready to face the next ball after a dismissal within two minutes.
