On October 4, the Union cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved a proposal for an amendment to the Central Universities Act, 2009 to establish a Central Tribal University in Telangana. According to a statement issued by the government, the cabinet approved the introduction of the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, which further amends the Central Universities Act, 2009.
This was done with the aim of establishing the Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University in the Mulugu district of Telangana as stipulated in the Thirteenth Schedule to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014.
On October 1, while visiting Telangana, which is awaiting elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the official establishment of the university at Mulugu. PM Modi revealed that the new tribal university will be named after Telangana’s tribal deities Sammakka and Sarakka. A budget of Rs. 889.07 crore would be allocated towards the establishment of this institution.
By offering educational and research facilities in tribal art, culture, and traditional knowledge systems for the benefit of the state’s tribal population, the new university shall not only expand access to and improve the standard of higher education in the state, but also foster avenues for higher education and expand knowledge.
“This new university will also create additional capacity and strive to remove regional imbalances,” the announcement highlighted.
The establishment of a National Turmeric Board, which would be particularly helpful to turmeric farmers in Telangana and the nation as a whole, was another announcement made by PM Modi during the same visit. The formation of a turmeric board has been a long-standing demand of Nizamabad’s turmeric cultivators.
During his public address, Modi underlined the significance of adopting a more professional approach throughout the turmeric value chain, which includes production, export, and research. He stressed on the government’s decision to establish the National Turmeric Board, which aims to serve turmeric farmers’ best interests by addressing their concerns as well as future prospects.
Additionally, he launched a number of development initiatives totaling more than Rs 13,500 crore in Telangana’s Mahabubnagar district.
PM Modi inaugurated several new facilities at Hyderabad University, including five distinct structures: the School of Economics, the School of Mathematics & Statistics, the School of Management Studies, Lecture Hall Complex – III, and the Sarojini Naidu School of Arts & Communication (Annexe).
