Opinion | Modi’s Cabinet: Why C R Patil Deserves a Seat at the Table
As Modi embarks on his third term, he will be looking to surround himself with trusted lieutenants who can translate his vision into reality. And C R Patil, with his unique blend of organisational skills, mass appeal and unwavering loyalty, fits the bill perfectly

As the tempestuous winds of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections settle with the Modi 3.0 swearing-in slated for today i.e. June 9, the political firmament is abuzz with speculation about the post-poll landscape. Amidst the maelstrom of conjectures, one name that has been increasingly dominating the discourse is that of Chandrakant Raghunath Patil, the maiden non-Gujarati incumbent President of the BJP’s Gujarat unit.

With Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NDA in numbers poised to secure a historic third term, the spotlight has shifted to the composition of his new Cabinet. And it is here that C R Patil’s star shines the brightest, as a strong contender for a pivotal role in the Union Council of Ministers.

Patil’s political odyssey is a testament to his indefatigable spirit and astute strategising. Born in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, Patil’s journey led him to the vibrant tapestry of Gujarat, where he not only embraced the state as his karmabhoomi but also etched his name in its political annals. From his humble beginnings as a police constable to his meteoric rise as a trusted lieutenant of Prime Minister Modi, Patil’s trajectory is a study in grit, determination, and unwavering loyalty.

The seeds of Patil’s ascent were sown during his tenure as the Chairman of Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited, a prestigious state PSU. His deft handling of the organisation’s intricacies and his ability to navigate the labyrinthine corridors of power caught the attention of the party’s high command. It was a natural progression, then, for Patil to assume the mantle of the BJP’s Gujarat unit in 2020, becoming the first non-Gujarati to helm the state’s saffron bastion.

Under Patil’s astute leadership, the BJP’s Gujarat citadel has only fortified further. The party’s historic victory in the 2022 Assembly elections, where it bagged a staggering 156 out of 182 seats, is a resounding endorsement of Patil’s organisational acumen and mass connection. His innovative strategies, like the ‘panna pramukh’ model and the ‘One Day, One District’ outreach program, have not only gained national replication but also earned him the nickname ‘Chanakya’ within the party circles. Out of the 26 seats under his stewardship, the BJP polled 25 in the 2024 general elections.

But it is also Patil’s electoral prowess that truly sets him apart. His back-to-back victories in the Navsari Lok Sabha constituency in 2014 and 2019, with record margins, are a testament to his unassailable popularity and grassroots appeal. In 2014, Patil’s victory margin of 5,58,116 votes was the third-highest in the country, while in 2019, he bettered his own record with a staggering margin of 6,89,668 votes. The numbers fared even better in 2024, where he secured a margin of 7.73 lakh votes. These numbers are not mere statistics; they are a resounding affirmation of the trust and faith that the people have reposed in him.

But Patil’s influence extends far beyond the boundaries of Gujarat. His close rapport with PM Modi and his proven track record of delivering results have made him an indispensable asset for the party. As Modi embarks on his third term, he will undoubtedly be looking to surround himself with trusted lieutenants who can translate his vision into reality. And C R Patil, with his unique blend of organisational skills, mass appeal, and unwavering loyalty, fits the bill perfectly.

Patil has the opportunity to significantly impact the national political landscape. He would bring to the table a wealth of experience, a keen understanding of the people’s pulse, and a track record of effective governance as a Union minister. His elevation would also be a recognition of Gujarat’s importance in the BJP’s political calculus, as well as a fitting reward for the state’s unwavering support for the party.

But Patil’s name remains etched in the sands of time, as winds of change sweep across the nation. His journey from the streets of Jalgaon to the corridors of power in New Delhi is a testament to the enduring power of democracy and the indomitable spirit of a leader who dared to dream big. As the nation awaits the dawn of a new era, one thing is certain: C R Patil’s tryst with destiny is far from over. His ascent to the Union Cabinet would mark a new chapter in his illustrious political career and a new dawn for the nation. And as he embarks on this new journey, the hopes and aspirations of millions will rest on his shoulders as he strives to build a New India that is stronger, more prosperous, and more united than ever before.
