According to Saran’s district magistrate, two bodies have been recovered and nine people managed to swim to the bank.
“We are at the spot and spoke to the people here. We also spoke with some of the people who were on the boat. They said that they used to go there for farming every morning and come back in the evening. They were 19 in number. As per the information available to us, 10 of them are safe, 2 died and 7 others are being rescued,” Saran DM Aman Samir said.
The incident took place around 6.30 pm when a boat carrying 18 people drowned in Saryu River near Matiyar Ghat in Manjhi block. “A rescue operation has been launched and we are trying to identify the deceased,” the DM said, adding further probe is underway to ascertain the cause of the incident.
This was the second major incident of boat capsize in the state in the recent past. The incident took place when Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was in the district to review the progress of several ongoing projects.
