Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi on Saturday described the opposition BJP and AGP as "parties of hypocrites" who were "shedding crocodile tears" for the people of Assam prior to the second phase assembly scheduled on April 11.
"We the Assamese do want to accuse people in such harsh words but I am bound to say that they (AGP, BJP) are hypocrites when they talk of corruption as an election plank", Gogoi told reporters in Guwahati.
"They have unleashed a vicious and misleading election campaign and the so called star campaigners (of BJP) show they care for the people who are amounting to shedding crocodile tears", Gogoi said.
"They (BJP and AGP) are a bunch of inefficient and useless people who have failed to discharge their duties", Gogoi added.
"The BJP recently held their national executive meeting here but no issues of relevance for the people of Assam was raised. Even their MLAs in the assembly were sleeping and failed to raise a single matter of importance", the Chief Minister said.
"Do you think Gujurat is corruption free and BJP's Narendra Modi is the supreme Chief Minister? In that case he should be given the Noble Prize", he said.
"Modism will not run here. Even if 100 Modis come they will not be able to make their presence felt", he said.
"BJP woke up at the fag end of the election to make wild, baseless and politically motivated alegations against our government through charge sheet", he said.
"Why they did not raise the N C hill scandal in parliament? They knew it would expose BJP's involvement in the scandal as they had alliance with the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) in the autonomous council", he said.
"On the other hand I have got the guilty arrested and referred the cases to the CBI. Nine cases have been already referred to the CBI in the N C hill scam", he said.
On the infiltration issue, Gogoi said the BJP was targetting the Congress government for allegedly failing to check migration. "I want to ask them why they failed to take any concrete steps when the NDA government was at the Centre and AGP in power in the state", he said.
"The BJP and AGP are patronising politics of hatred and want to create a divide among the voters. We do not want the vote of Bangladeshis to win the election", Gogoi said.
The chief minister denied there was any "secret pact" with the minority dominated All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) party.
"We have never wanted their support. We can form government without them even if they are combined (BJP, AGP, AIUF),” he said.
"If they come of their own to support us we will think", Gogoi said.
"Advani and all other BJP leaders have been highlighting the issue of illegal migrants. What steps he had taken when he was the union home minister?" he said.
"Being the then home minister he (Advani) did not discuss this issue with the then chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta. He did not visit the border areas even," he said.
"On the other hand Shivraj Patil who was the home minister in UPA government visited Indo-Bangla border which was followed by my strong steps to check infiltration," he added.
"Advani and Modi's attempt to divide the people on religion basis and gain political support will not be successful. This is against Assamese culture. So long I am chief minister I will not allow this to happen," Gogoi said.
"To term the Indian Assamese citizen as Bangladeshi is an insult to the citizens of Assam. We want to build a greater Assamese society and though originally they were Bengali speaking they adopted Assamese as their mother tongue. BJP do not want greater Assamese society," Gogoi said.
