Bengaluru: Police on Tuesday arrested SN Channabasappa, a BJP leader from Shimoga for threatening Chief Minister Siddaramaiah over the latter's beef eating remark.
Shimoga district police have arrested him for openly threatening the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, BJP unconditionally disowned the statement of Channabasappa against the CM and terms it as an uncalled for speech he delivered.
Channabasappa has been sternly warned against using such provocative, unbecoming language despite being instigated by others.
Party will also seek explanation from Channabasappa on his remarks.
Party has also asked all the other leaders to restrain from using offensive language and not to cross lakshman Rekha at any point under whatever circumstance.
"We completly disapprove Channabasappa's statement which is against our political culture and our ethos" said party officials.
The BJP leader had openly threatened Siddaramaiah over eating beef.
Speaking at a public gathering, Channabasappa, who is also an ex-councillor dared the Karnataka Chief Minister to eat beef at Gopi Circle in the city.
"Has the Chief Minister ever slaughtered a cow? How dare he talk in public about consuming beef. If the Chief Minister has ever eaten beef, his neck will be on the line," he said.
According to a leading English daily ‘Deccan Herald’, Channabasappa, former president of the earstwhile Shimoga Municipality said, “By making such a statement, the Congress leader has hurt the sentiments of Hindus. We have all grown up drinking cow’s milk.”
He was speaking at a protest organised by the BJP against the chief minister’s remark on beef.
Reacting to the local BJP's leader's comment, Siddaramaiah said, “I am not scared of any threat. They are the ones who eat beef. If the threat is true, police may take action”.
Channabasappa's statement had come after Siddaramaiah ridiculed the Centre's anti-beef policy saying that no one can stop him from eating beef.
"I haven't had beef. But I will eat. Who are you to question? Whatever is comfortable for me, I will eat." he said referring to the BJP leaders' objection to beef consumption while interacting with the media in Bengaluru on Thursday.
The BJP and its affiliates had condemned Siddaramaiah’s statement.
