New Delhi: BJP on Tuesday rejected the government's contention on the CAG report on Commonwealth Games scam and said though three successive Sports Ministers of the UPA government had drawn the Prime Minister's attention, he took no action.
Sports Minister Ajay Maken on Tuesday attacked the NDA government saying it had appointed Suresh Kalmadi as Games organizing committee chief and for entering into a Host City contract that was the source of all problems.
BJP rebutted this contention and instead charged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with not taking any action.
"The fact is that three successive Sports Ministers of the UPA government- Sunil Dutt, Mani Shankar Aiyar and MS Gill- kept drawing the attention of the Prime Minister towards it. But this is another case where the PM wanted to keep it at an arm's length," Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley told.
The leaked CAG report has charged that Singh did not pay heed to the letters written by Dutt and others to apprise the government of the "wrongdoings". Dutt had, in fact, initially been appointed as head of the OC only to be replaced by Kalmadi.
BJP plans to attack the government when the CAG report is tabled in Parliament and feels it has given it another handle to take on the Prime Minister. The fresh revelations during the court proceedings in 2G scam case have already given it enough ammunition against Singh.
