New Delhi: It seems the Chhattisgarh has shocked the ruling BJP. The trends are suggesting a very close contest between the BJP and the Congress.
The Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh was confident of coming to power for the third straight term by defeating the Congress. The Congress is leading in the tribal dominated, Maoist affected Bastar area, where the BJP earlier won 11 out if 12 seats.
The wheelchair bound former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi led Congress has really shocked the ruling BJP by engaging in a neck and neck fight with it.
All pre-poll, exit poll and post-poll surveys have predicted a clear victory for the BJP. Proving the pollsters wrong, the Congress is marching ahead of the BJP.
If the state throws up a hung assembly, the Congress has a better chance of forming the government with the help of Communist parties and others.
The BJP is still in a strong position in the Central part of the state, which has 40 seats.
The BJP was heavily banking on the welfare schemes started by Raman Singh. The faction ridden Congress seems to have managed to put the house in order to return to power after 10 years in the opposition.
The slain Congress leader Mahendra Karma's wife Devati Karma is leading. According to analysts, the sympathy factor has also helped the Congress to make Chhattisgarh a neck and neck contest.
If the same trends continue the Congress will most likely unseat the BJP. The Congress spokesman Prof. Rajeev Gowda said "it is a good news. The BJP has lost the state".
The BJP spokesman Nirmal Seetharaman said that the party would react only after all official results come out.
Narendra Modi had extensively campaigned in Chhattisgarh attacking the UPA.
