Cong slams Maken's no-caste-in-census stand
Union Minister Ajay Maken had written a letter to young MPs asking them to oppose caste-based Census.

New Delhi: Congress on Friday disapproved of Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Maken for writing a letter to young MPs asking them to oppose inclusion of caste in Census and said he should have avoided it.

"No one who is sitting in a responsible position in the government should make such a statement," Congress spokesman Janardhan Dwivedi told reporters here.

"He should have avoided writing the letter," Dwivedi said, adding he had talked to Maken and he also felt the same.

The Congress spokesman said Maken's views in the letter were his "personal opinion".

Maken on Thursday wrote to young MPs urging them to oppose the regressive move that was being pushed as part of "divisive agenda for short-term political gain", adding a new dimension to the raging debate on whether caste should be included in Census.

The minister, in his letter, argued that the UPA had come to power on developmental agenda and any move to include caste in Census would be "disastrous" for politicians, particularly the young ones who have a long future.

Maken said the "young conscience-driven individuals" like him had served the people and thrived politically on the all-inclusive development agenda.
