Kolkata: Despite massive campaign against the ruling Left Front, it is confident of making a turnaround in the assembly elections and form a record eighth government in West Bengal, Health Minister Surjya Kanta Mishra said in Kolkata on Friday.
"We admit mistakes in implementing some government policies and in my department. Measures have been taken to correct them. We are confident about a turnaround despite the campaign against us," Mishra, who belongs to the CPM, told reporters here.
Describing the Trinamool Congress-Congress alliance as reactionary and opportunist with the backing of vested interests from home and abroad, Mishra said that despite this the opposition would fail to capture power.
Speaking about the agriculture, Mishra said that despite a difficult situation in the sector nationwide, the state has improved a great deal and surpassed the performance of many states. Claiming that the agriculture policy of the Centre was a failure, Mishra said that the UPA-II government was taking steps at the dictates of the US like the earlier NDA government.
"The interest of farmers have not been taken care of by these governments, who are busy in protecting the interest of the US," he said.
"It is the LF government which achieved success in land reforms and reached its benefit to farmers," Mishra said and claimed that they have been a victim of politics in Nandigram and Singur.
"Land is required for industrialisation, but it should be acquired through consensus," Mishra said adding that no land was acquired in Nandigram, while there was consensus in Singur for acquisition. It was the opposition which misguided some people in these places," he said.
The minister said that the LF government had been able to acquire 8,000 acre of land even under this situation while investments increased from Rs 4,000 crore in 2008 to 15,000 crore in 2010. Claiming success in the panchayati raj system and rural development in the state, Mishra blamed the Centre for delays and lapses.
