Kumbakonam: Former Tamil Nadu BJP unit President L Ganesan on Friday slammed the freebies announced by DMK and AIADMK in their election manifestos for the assembly elections, saying they "reduced the people to beggars".
At a campaign meeting at Kumbakonam, Ganesan said freebies were unnecessary if political parties were confident about the deeds they have done for the people. Resorting to announcing freebies only showed, "You are not confident to win votes by your acts and deeds", alleged Ganesan.
"I never spoke about the 2G spectrum scandal. The people came to know of it through the free television distributed by DMK", Ganesan claimed.
Citing the example of Gujarat, where BJP is in power, Ganesan said that when opposition Congress promised free power in its poll manifesto, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had promised uninterrupted three-phase power supply, but no free power. But he had still been voted to power, Ganesan said.
"If you have confidence, then there is no need for freebies", he said.
Alleging there was "no difference" between DMK and AIADMK, he said, "AIADMK accuses DMK of sand smuggling. But it started in their period. The DMK alliance is caste based and so is the AIADMK alliance. (Both combines) claim votes on caste basis, (but they) claim to be secular. BJP raises its
voice based on issues and for that we want mandate".
Ganesan also said BJP welcomed the Election Commission's efforts to hold the polls in the state in a "peaceful manner".
