Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) led by Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, is surging ahead in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections, bagging 30 seats and leading in 40 divisions of the 150-member civic body, followed by Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM whereas the TDP-BJP combine and the Congress are faring poorly.
The AIMIM, led by the Hyderabad MP, has won 12 seats while the TDP-BJP combine and Congress have collectively won only three seats so far.
The counting for the February 2 elections was taken up at 3 PM after being pushed back following the repoll in Puranapul division today, election officials said.
GHMC election was seen to be a "prestigious battle" as it was the first election of the civic body after formation of Telangana, which was carved out of Andhra Pradesh in 2014. The TRS performance was seen to be a spectacular one given it had not contested the previous GHMC polls in 2009.
The KCR-led party had bagged only three Assembly seats out of the total 24 that fall under the civic body limits, in Andhra Pradesh Assembly elections of 2009. The results are particularly a loss of face for the Congress which had shared power with AIMIM in GHMC.
The Congress had bagged 55 seats in GHMC election in 2009 while AIMIM won 43 seats and the TDP-BJP, not in alliance then, collectively won 50.
