Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday hit out at the INDIA bloc over an alleged call for “vote jihad” by Congress leader Salman Khurshid’s niece Maria Alam, saying that the woman leader’s appeal for Muslim unity in voting had “exposed” the INDIA bloc’s strategy for the ongoing Lok Sabha election.
Addressing an election rally in Gujarat’s Anand, PM Modi said by calling for ‘vote jihad’, “INDI alliance has insulted democracy and the Constitution.”
“A leader from the INDI alliance has exposed their strategy in front of the country. INDI alliance has asked Muslims to go for Vote Jihad. This has come from an educated family, not from a child coming out of a Madrasa. INDI alliance is saying that all Muslims should get together and vote. The INDI alliance has insulted democracy and the Constitution,” he said.
He further pointed out that none of the Congress leaders have opposed Alam’s statement till now.
“They have a tacit understanding. On one hand, the INDI alliance is trying to divide SC, ST, OBC and general categories and on the other, they are raising the slogan of Vote Jihad. This shows how dangerous their intentions are,” Modi added.
The Prime Minister’s remark came days after Samajwadi Party leader Maria Alam Khan allegedly made the ‘vote jihad’ appeal during a public rally in Uttar Pradesh’s Kayamganj on April 30. Khan along with Khurshid- the event’s chief guest- have been booked for promoting enmity between classes, among other sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Representation of the People Act.
