Srinagar: Dramatic scenes were witnessed outside Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani's residence in Jammu and Kashmir's Hyderpora on Sunday as his supporters clashed with police. Geelani's supporters even raised Pakistani flags.
Geelani was put under house arrest in the morning ahead of a seminar he was to address in Srinagar. A large contingent of police was deployed along the Airport Road, blocking the entrance to Geelani's residence at Hyderpora.
His supporters had gathered outside his residence to accompany him to the seminar. Irked by this, Hurriyat activists assembled at a nearby Mosque and tried to break through the police cordon, the official said.
Police used water cannon, batons and fired a few rounds of tear gas shells to disperse the protesters. There were no reports of anyone getting injured in the brief clashes, he added.
A protester said, "Our people are consistently being arrested. Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been put under house arrest again."
