Key Cong meet fails to break Telangana deadlock
The party's stand on the demand for separate statehood remains unclear.

New Delhi: The Congress core committee that met on Tuesday to discuss the Telangana crisis issue ended with no solution to the stalemate.

The party's stand on the demand for separate statehood remained unclear even as Congress MPs from the Telanagana region put pressure on their high command.

The MPs even urged Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar to accept their resignations.

They have sought an appointment with her on Wednesday.

The pro-Telangana agitation has been on for about a month now.

The congress had earlier discussed the issue internally after party in-charge for Andhra Pradesh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, submitted his report to party president Sonia Gandhi.

The latest consultations among the Congress Core Group took place after central leaders had detailed deliberations with Chief Minister Kiran Kumar Reddy and Governor E S L Narasimhan as also a cross section of leaders from Telangana and other parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Azad was special invitee to the meeting attended among others by Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram, Defence Minister A K Antony and political secretary to Congress president Ahmad Patel.

There was no official word on what transpired at the hour-long meeting held amid reports that the leadership wanted to complete the consultation process within the Congress on the Telangana statehood issue.

Government leaders have refused to give any deadline for resolving the ticklish matter, which has gained fresh urgency following the revival of the agitation.
