New Delhi: After Speaker Meira Kumar received severe criticism for stalling the live telecast of Lok Sabha proceedings during debate on Telangana Bill, the Lok Sabha has now issued a statement saying that the blackout was a result of technical glitch.
"The proceedings of the Lok Sabha could not be telecast live by Lok Sabha Television due to technical problems when the House assembled at 15-00 hrs on 18th February, 2014," it said.
It also said that the CEO of Lok Sabha TV is investigating as of how the technical fault took place.
The Lok Sabha also said that even as the proceedings in House could not be brought forth to the general public, every single event that occurred in the House was on the record and in the public domain. "It is unfortunate that people were unable to watch the live telecast of the passage of this bill which was done democratically. All the proceedings are on record and in the public domain," it read.
Earlier Union ministers Sushil Kumar Shinde and Rajeev Shukla had advocated that the stalling of live telecast of proceedings in House was normal and depended entirely on the Speaker.
Shukla had also said that the government had no intentions to keep anything behind closed doors. He justified Speaker's decision saying that the media gallery was open for media persons.
The statement issued by Lok Sabha echoed Shukla's remarks as it said, "The Press was present in full strength in the press gallery at all times to witness and report how the events unfolded."
The Secretary General of Lok Sabha has now asked the CEO of Lok Sabha TV to fix the technical issue before the House reconvenes at 11 am on Wednesday.
