Mumbai: The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has swept the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation winning 55 out of 89 seats. The Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party combine has captured Aurangabad winning 37 seats.
But in a major surprise Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena hase been decimated, failing to win even a single seat in the the Navi Mumbai municipal elections. MNS managed to win only one seat in Aurangabad.
The Congress party won 11 seats in Navi Mumbai and 24 seats in Aurangabad. The next battle in both the municipalities will be over the post of mayor for which political parties are now gearing up.
The elections for the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation were held on Sunday along with the civic elections in Aurangabad, Ambernath and Kulgaon Badlapur.
The elections in Navi Mumbai saw a voter turnout of 56.73 per cent while it was 62 per cent in Aurangabad. Ambernath and Kulgaon Badlapur registered a voter turnout of 52 and 57 per cent respectively.
