Opposition Staring At a Near Whitewash As BJP-led NDA Inches Closer to Win 39 Seats In Bihar

The state of Bihar Sends a total of 40 legislators to the parliament. BJP-JD(U)-LJP have Leads/Wins on 39 seats while the Congress is battling it out in Kishanganj for survival

The Bharatiya Janata Party-National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is all set to register a near whitewash in Bihar with Leads/Wins on 39 of the 40 seats in the state. The only seat where the NDA candidate is trailing is Kishanganj where Congress' Dr. Mohammad Jawed is leading.

The BJP has already won 13 of the 17 seats that it is contesting in the state as part of the seat-sharing arrangement and is also leading on the remaining four. It's partners Janata Dal (United) and Loktantrik Janata Party (LJP) have also registered a landslide on their allotted seats. While the JD(U) has won 10 and is leading in six of the remaining seven of its quota of seven seats, LJP has five of its six allotted seats and is leading on the seventh one too.

Among the key contestants that won for the NDA include Chirag Paswan from Jamui, Giriraj Singh from Begusarai, Ravishankar Prasad from Patna Sahib, Pashu Pati Kumar Paras from Hajipur, and Ramchandra Paswan from Samastipur.

Those who lost from the Opposition front include Sharad Yadav from Madhepura, Meira Kumar from Sasaram and Upendra Kushwaha from Karakat. Apart from this, Communist Party of India's (CPI) Kanhaiya Kumar, who was contesting his first election, also lost from Begusarai. RJD's Misa Bharti is also trailing from Pataliputra.

While the RJD, which had won six seats in 2014 in Bihar, is heading towards a blank, Congress is battling it out in Kishanganj for survival.

As the election results have lead to a BJP rout, as predicted by the exit polls, experts argue that Nitish Kumar's own stature within his alliance with the BJP would reduce. On the other side of the spectrum is the 'mahagathbandhan' of Rashtriya Lok Dal (RJD), Congress, Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtirya Lok Samta Party (RLSP), Jitan Manjhi's Hindustan Awam Morcha (HAM), Mukesh Sahni's Vikasshil Insan Party (VIP), and Sharad Yadav's Loktantrik Janata Dal (LJD). The state went to polls in seven phases. Over the last five Lok Sabha elections between 1998 and 2014, RJD has been the most successful party in the state in terms of Vote-share, getting the highest number of votes in three of them – 1998, 1999, and 2004.
