Opposition unity on price rise worries UPA
BJP wants adjournment motion on LPG and kerosene price but Left, RJD, SP and JD(U) want it on the wider issue.

New Delhi: The Congress-led United Progressive Alliance Government is facing a tough time in Parliament with the Opposition adamant on raising the price rise issue and embarrass the Government.

The Bharatiya Janata Party moved an adjournment motion on rise in prices of LPG and kerosene on Tuesday which entails voting. The BJP strategy put the Government on the back foot as fuel price hike is a critical issue which warrants an adjournment motion

But Left Front, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Samajwadi Party and Janata Dal (United) have moved the motion on the broader issue of price rise which does not warrant an adjournment motion.

Government sources say they are going to tap on this technicality to wriggle out from the possibility of the motion being granted in the Lok Sabha. The Government is also keen to show the internal divisions and confusion in the Opposition camp. Government has also offered immediate calling of short duration discussion on Wednesday, even doing away with Question Hour.

UPA's largest constituent the Congress has already issued a whip to its Lok Sabha MPs to be present in the House. But Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, who has been critical of the increase in fuel prices, says she is with Government on the issue and won't support any adjournment motion.
