Panel set up to probe 2G is unacceptable: BJP
The Union Government appointed a one man committee to look into the telecom policy from 2001 to 2009.

New Delhi:Addressing the media after the Union Government appointed a one man committee to look into the telecom policy from 2001 to 2009, BJP leader Arun Jaitley said that the BJP is disappointed with the government's decision to set up a single member committee to look into the 2G scam.

Kapil Sibal's one man commiittee, to be headed by a former Supreme Court judge, will also probe the NDA's role in the spectrum allocation.

"We are looking at internal departmental procedure adopted by DOT. During the period 2001-2009 of the issuance of telecom service licences...service licences in allocation of spectrum, to all telecom asses services licencees during the above period," said Sibal.

The BJP rejected Sibal's single member panel, set up to probe the 2G allocation process, saying that its a breach of parliamentary privilege.

Stating that the government has been running away from a Joint Parliamentary Committe into the 2G probe, Jaitley said, "Government has been only involved in cover ups, whether it is the appointment of CVC or the role of CBI."

Jaitley also said that the issues are big issues and have caused massive losses to the country at large. He said, "Not just spectrum allocation, but the kind of lobbies at work, serious charges of corruption, appointment of CVC, all these issues demand a JPC and cannot be investigated by any other forum."

Raising questions as to whether a retired judge is capable enough to investigate into such a big issue, the BJP leader said, "While the Parliament is functional, such issues being decided by a retired judge, is not acceptible to us. The Parliament should be the only body that should go into it." He added, "Parliament should not be expected to abdicate its duty."

Stating the appointment of the single member committee as an unprecedented event, Jaitley said, "BJP rejects the constitution of the panel and we have no difficulty as to when the JPC begins its investigation from."

The briefing took place hours after telecom Minister Kapil Sibal announced that the Telecom Ministry has decided to set up a one-man committee comprising of retired judge of Supreme Court justice Shivraj Vir Patil to examine the appropriateness of procedure by DoT (Department of Telecom) in issuance of licence and allocation of licences from 2001 to 2009.
