Kanpur: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday slammed the BSP Government in UP and said her son, Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi, would go to jail if needed to protest against it.
"It is time to seek an account from the state government on how it has spent funds. You will have to be ready to go to jail for this," she said at the last day of the two-day Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee convention in Kanpur.
"I think nothing can happen in Uttar Pradesh until our workers are ready to go to jail. Are all of you ready to go to jail? If need be Rahul will join you to go to jail," she said.
"The Central government has given millions of rupees to the UP government but not enough has been done for the people. It is time to ask the Uttar Pradesh government to give an account of where this money was spent," she said in her sharpest attack on the BSP since it took power in UP.
After attacking the BSP, Sonia admitted that the Congress had weakened in the UP because of “mistakes”.
"The question as to why the Congress weakened in the state is there in the minds of the people and also myself. It is said that emergence of casteist and communal forces has weakened the party but I am not satisfied with this answer," Sonia said.
"Somewhere we have also committed mistakes. Our own party leaders too have failed to make any difference. No success can be achieved without organisation. Perhaps we had started thinking that we are bigger than the organisation)," she said.
SP says no to alliance
The Congress’ attempt to find new alliances received a jolt when SP leader Amar Singh refused to have any truck with it.
"We are in UNPA. We are a confederation of many regional parties. We will strictly adhere to the anti-Congress and
anti-BJP politics adopted by the UNPA and there was no quesiton of any tie-up with Congress in general elections," Amar Singh said.
Congress leader Digivijay Singh had on Sunday said his party was ready to ally with anti-communal parties and praised the SP for “containing” the BJP.
