Lucknow: Rumours abound that BSP Supremo Mayawati might announce support to the SP-RLD candidate for the Kairana bypoll and may join discussions for a joint opposition candidate for Noorpur bypoll.
The rumours come after SP president Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati, RLD chief Ajit Singh and former Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi shared the stage and projected a united front at Karnataka CM HD Kumaraswamy’s swearing-in on Wednesday in Bengaluru.
Mayawati has called a National Executive meeting on Saturday in Lucknow, where sources say the Dalit leader would discuss joining hands with the other opposition parties for the bypolls with other key BSP leaders.
Sources say Mayawati would hold off until the last minute to announce her support just like she did ahead of Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls.
The agenda for the National Executive meeting, officially, is said to be preparedness for 2019 and key issues that need to be addressed ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
Earlier, after the joint opposition candidate won Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls, Mayawati had made it clear that the BSP would not be supporting any party in future bypolls. The BSP has not fielded a candidate for Kairana.
Apart from this, there is also a buzz among BSP leaders that after the warmth shared between the Dalit leader and Sonia Gandhi in Bengaluru, the former may consider the Congress’ offer for a pre-poll alliance in the three North Indian states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan which are gearing up for assembly polls.
