Tamil Nadu: DMDK chief lashes out at AIADMK
"Why is the government holding elections, if it feels that no political party should contest in the elections?", he said in a statement.

Dindigul: DMDK chief and Leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu assembly Vijayakanth on Tuesday hit out at the ruling party's 'atrocities' ahead of the local body polls in the state and demanded to know why it was being held if government felt no political party should contest.

"Why is the government holding elections, if it feels that no political party should contest in the elections?", he said in a statement. Vijayakant alleged that the state government was resorting to various manoeuvres and manipulations to ensure that only ruling partymen become Mayors of corporations and Chairmen of Panchayats and other local bodies.

Pointing out that people knew very well that local body polls had been 'thrust' on them, he alleged that the 'fraud' played by the ruling party was beyond acceptable limit. It was arbitray on the Part of the local election commission to announce on Aug 6 that local body bypolls would be held on September 18, cancel the elections the same day, and again announce on August 28 that elections would be held as announced earlier.

He urged political parties to join hands and oppose the 'arbitrary' functioning of the state government.
