New Delhi: The political drama in Karnataka took a new turn on Saturday when the state Tourism Minister and BJP leader B Sriramulu demitted office, apparently as part of a compromise formula to placate an angry JD(S).
It was Sriramulu, whose complaint of attempt to murder against Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has provoked party leader Deve Gowda to pull out of talks with BJP leadership, driving a wedge between the alliance partners.
Sriramulu was in Bellary earlier on Saturday, but later in the day he rushed to the capital and handed over his resignation to BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.
The resignation comes after hectic consultations between senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha and state party leaders where it was decided that Sriramulu's resignation could help mollify the JD(S) and ensure smooth transfer power to the saffron party under an agreement reached 20 months back.
Sinha was deputed by the BJP leadership to deal with the crisis after Gowda to pull out of power transfer talks with the BJP leadership. Later in the day, Yashwant Sinha sought a meeting with Gowda for talks on the transfer of power to his party on October 3.
Sinha told a reporters in Bangalore that he would seek an appointment with Gowda to iron out the differences and ensure smooth transition of power to BJP.
"I propose to seek an appointment with Gowda and meet him, if he so agrees at a mutually convenient date and time," Sinha, who is also the in-charge of BJP affairs in Karnataka, said.
There is no word from JD(S) over the ongoing crisis as Gowda and his son Kumaraswamy are away from the city. Sinha said BJP was hopeful that JD(S) will honour its agreement on power transfer.
"It is our firm belief even at this stage that the agreement reached 20 months ago between BJP and JD(S) about the coalition government will fructify," Sinha said expressing displeasure over JD-S's attempt to put the power transfer on hold.
