Murshidabad: In a shocking incident in West Bengal, workers of the Congress party trashed the home of the District Magistrate of Murshidabad, led by no less than Union Minister of State for Railways, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary. He further defended himself saying the DM had affronted state Congress leaders and the rampaging workers were within their rights.
Hundreds of Congress workers, led by party MP, ransacked the premises after the DM allegedly refused to meet them when they went to complain about the alleged custodial death of a Congress worker in January.
The West Bengal Congress leadership also stood by him while the Trinamool Congress was quick to grab political mileage. Former Union Railway Minister Mukul Roy said that he had no words to condemn the violence as it was led by a Union Minister.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, Roy said, "Adhir's presence in that area is a clear violation of the model code of conduct of the Election Commission since Assembly by-elections for the Rejinagar seats have been announced."
Later, the Congress Union Minister said he would resign as a minister if it was proved that his supporters broke any chair at the District Magistrate's home.
From Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee losing her cool to one Union Minister allegedly indulging in street violence, and with the Panchayat elections just around the corner, West Bengal politics seems to be getting uglier every day.
