Chennai: In significant remarks, AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi asked party leaders in Tamil Nadu not to continue the practice of riding piggyback on the two Dravidian major parties in the state.
He asked the leaders to work towards regaining the power it had lost to the Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) in 1967.
“Don't continue to ride on the back of two major Dravidian parties (DMK and AIADMK). Work hard and refurbish the image of the party,” Rahul told party’s state executive in Chennai.
He is on a three-day tour to Tamil Nadu to strengthen the party and encourage youngsters to join Congress youth wing.
Rahul said the party had bright chances of returning to power only if the cadres worked hard and took up the cause of the people and worked for their development.
Touching on the issue of factionalism that has been dogging the party's state unit, he asked Congress workers to rise above factional politics.
He said inner-party elections right from panchayat level should be conducted without any delay to give a new image to the party.
Earlier, several Congressmen in the state had demanded that the high command ask the DMK to share power with the Congress in the state as the government was depending on the party's support.
They also wanted the state unit to float a front headed by it to contest the 2011 Assembly polls.
