Film director Bandreddi Sukumar, better known as Sukumar needs no introduction. In his career spanning decades, the Telugu filmmaker has delivered some noteworthy films that are still cherished by movie lovers. Hitting the right chords with his debut directorial Arya, released in 2004, there has been no looking back for the talented director. Now, he is geared up for the release of his upcoming marvel Pushpa 2 aka Pushpa: The Rule. With Sukumar turning a day older on January 11, let’s take a look at some of the top-notch movies of the 54-year-old.

Rangasthalam 1985 — (2018)

The 2018 film revolves around a partially deaf villager named Chitti Babu who fears that his brother Kumar Babu’s life is in danger after the duo gets embroiled in an ugly battle with a corrupt village president. The two brothers swear to overthrow the 30-year-long oppressive rule of the village head. Starring Ram Charan in the lead, alongside Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Aadhi, and Jagapathi Babu, Rangasthalam in 1985 bagged the National Film Award for Best Audiography.

Arya and Arya 2 — (2004, 2009)

Allu Arjun’s masterclass acting and Sukumar’s brilliant directorial made Arya a hit. The film follows the story of a free-spirited and flamboyant individual Arya who tries to pursue the woman of his dreams Geethanjali. The only problem is that Geethanjali is already committed to her partner Ajay — a rowdy and indisciplined college student. Anuradha Mehta acted as the female lead.

Arya’s success paved the way for the film’s sequel titled Arya 2, which was released in 2009. Reprising his role again was Allu Arjun, this time for a story where two childhood friends with two highly contrasting lives, fall for the same woman. Arya 2, starred Kajal Aggarwal in the lead.

1: Nenokkadine (2014)

Starring Mahesh Babu in the lead, 1: Nenokkadine centres around a rock star named Gautham, played by Mahesh Babu, who is fighting with his inner demons and psychological inhibitions to avenge the death of his parents. Not only is he missing about 25 per cent of his grey matter but Gautham also suffers from schizophrenia. With umpteen action and a gripping storyline, this Sukumar film was one of a kind.

Nannaku Prematho (2016)

Nannaku Prematho stars Jr NTR as the protoganist. He plays the role of an intelligent man named Abhiram who embarks on a mission to take revenge against a powerful but immoral businessman — Krishna Murthy Kautilya for ruining his father financially in the past. Also starring Rakul Preet Singh and Jagapathi Babu, the action-thriller was a hit back then.

Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1 (2021)

After Arya and Arya 2, Sukumar worked wonders with his third collaboration with Allu Arjun. One of the highest-grossing films of 2021, Pushpa: The Rise tells the tale of a labourer named Pushpa who rises above the rank of a smuggling syndicate after illegally distributing rare red sandals. Allu Arjun’s fierce performance, a gritty plot, Rashmika Mandanna as Srivalli, and high-octane action sequences made the film a blockbuster.
