New Delhi: There is a reason why all websites insist on using a strong password, which basically entails a combination of characters and numbers. However, after a security expert cracked some of the passwords leaked following the major Ashley Madison hack, the results were sadly terrible.

An estimated 36 million accounts associated with the controversial website were compromised and when some 4,000 passwords were cracked, the most common password used was undoubtedly 123456.

A report on ZDNet explains that the leaked passwords were hashed, which means they were cryptographically scrambled using a feature known as bcrypt. However, this feature does ensure absolute safety for those having a weaker password.

After the ‘cracking rig’ process it was discovered that some of the most used passwords were the most predictable ones, including Ashley, qwerty, Madison, 12345, abc123, and the worst- password!

Earlier data breaches of Adobe and Yahoo user databases too highlighted similarly predictable password combinations when in the latter case password ‘123456’ was the most used.

What's your reaction?
