New Delhi: After a string of leaks, Apple finally introduced two new iPhone models, dubbed the 6s and 6s Plus, which the company says will go on sale starting September 25 - with advance orders starting on September 12. The new iPhones are roughly the same size as their predecessors and will cost the same as the 6 and 6 Plus models introduced last year, which will now sell for $100 less.

While the new iPhones look more or less the same (in terms of both dimensions and design) as the last-gen models, they have some freshness on inside. Helping you understand how the new iPhone 6s and 6s Plus differ from the earlier ones, we have compiled a list of upgrades and enhancements that the new iPhones come with.

1. Sturdy: Apple says the frames of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are made of a stronger form of aluminum. Last fall, Apple got some complaints that the iPhone 6 Plus was more prone to bending than previous models. Apple defended its manufacturing standards and said bending was rare with normal use of an iPhone. Still, the stronger frame in this year's iPhone 6s and 6s Plus should help reduce those problems.

2. 3D Touch: The most noticeable upgrade in the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus is the addition of 3D Touch - a feature that uses added screen sensors to detect the difference between a light tap and extended finger pressure, triggering different menus and functions for apps made by Apple and outside developers. 3D Touch allows easy access to frequent tasks by holding down on an icon. For instance, it'll be possible to update a Facebook status right from the home screen.

With 3D Touch, pressing down hard on the new iPhones will launch additional capabilities. For example, you can get quick access to tasks such as taking a selfie or getting directions home. From a message, 3D Touch will give you a preview of a Web link without launching the browser.

Apple introduced this concept with some Mac laptops in March. It's called Force Touch on other devices. Press for a few seconds on a document icon, and a preview pops out. Press on an address in an email, and a map opens up. On some video apps, the pressure determines how quickly you forward or rewind.

Apple Watch also has Force Touch. Press on the Workout app, for instance, to pause or end a run.

3. Improved cameras: The new iPhones come with sharper cameras. The main camera on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus have a resolution of 12 megapixels. It's the first increase since 2011, when the iPhone 4s got 8 megapixels, compared with 5 megapixels before.

Apple said that it waited until it could ensure delivering more megapixels without image degradation.

Meanwhile, the front camera for selfies is getting a boost to 5 megapixels, from 1.2 megapixels. Plus, the new iPhones will use the main display as a flash, something the front camera now lacks.

And video recording will be improved to the Ultra HD, or 4k, resolution found on Samsung and Sony phones.

With a feature called Live Photos, the iPhone camera records an extra second or so before you take still shots so that images appear in motion.

4. Faster processor: The new iPhones will have faster processors. The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are engineered with A9, Apple's third-generation 64-bit chip, which is claimed to have 70 per cent faster CPU and 90 per cent faster GPU performance than the A8 chipset.

5. New software: The new iPhones will use the upcoming iOS 9 operating system, which supports new features such as 3D touch. The upgraded operating system will be released on September 16.

The new iOS 9 software brings transit directions, a news-viewing app and other refinements. With the new software, users will be able to scroll through photos more quickly. The font is bolder and easier to read. The update, however, isn't as huge as what you got in previous years.

5. New colour: In addition to the regular gold, silver, space gray colours, the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available in the new rose gold metallic finish.
