Astronomers Discover Special Exoplanet That Might Help In Studying Earth's Origins
Scientists have identified a small exoplanet circling a star with a temperature akin to our Sun. This star is known as HD88986.

In a recent discovery, astronomers have identified a special exoplanet that could provide crucial insights into how Earth was formed. International scientists discovered this unique exoplanet, which is lighter than both Neptune and Uranus. Found in a star system with a planet more than a hundred times larger than Jupiter in its outer region, researchers suggest that the conditions on this exoplanet might resemble those of early Earth.

The diminutive, cold planet is smaller than Neptune. This discovery is poised to aid scientists in delving into the enigmatic origins of Earth.

Dr Neda Haidari, leading the study at the Institut d’Astrophysique de Paris (IAP), brings attention to a significant finding: the exoplanet HD88986b, recognised for its unusually long journey around its star. While most planets complete their orbits in under 40 days, HD88986b takes much longer. This extended orbit not only makes spotting such planets risky but also adds complexity to the understanding of how planets in our solar system formed.

HD88986b completes one orbit around its star in 146 days, a contrast to Mercury in our solar system, which takes 88 days to revolve around the Sun. Analyzing data from various telescopes, scientists determined that this planet is expected to be twice the size of Earth. The study outcomes have been published in the Astronomy and Astrophysics Journal.

The atmosphere of HD88986b maintains a temperature of around 190 degrees Celsius, a relatively moderate level according to scientists. This is noteworthy as other exoplanets discovered have atmospheres exceeding a scorching one thousand degrees Celsius. HD88986b orbits its star at a distance equivalent to 60 per cent of Earth’s distance from the Sun.

Nestled between Venus and Mercury, HD88986b becomes a key focus for researchers. They believe that understanding this planet will offer crucial insights into how Earth and similar planets came into existence. A Jupiter-like planet in HD88986b’s outer region boosts its appeal for scientific exploration, reflecting similarities with the solar system.
