As you fly on your way to a holiday destination, catching a quick nap is essential. While passengers can doze off in their seats, have you ever wondered where pilots take rest during long flights? To answer this question, Captain Tewodros Solomon of Ethiopian Airlines shared a sneak peek and revealed a cozy yet tight space where pilots rest. In the footage, viewers get a glimpse of a restricted access room behind the cockpit, featuring two reclining seats. The camera then reveals a platform with two, full length sleeping bunks, which can be covered by curtains. While some viewers expressed concern about the cramped sleeping pods called their sleeping pods claustrophobic, others were horrified and worried by the fact that pilots take breaks during flights.

Sharing the post, Solomon wrote, “Have you ever wondered if pilots take naps during long flights? Well, I can tell you that during those lengthy journeys, they do actually take some well deserved rest. They have different options to choose from when it comes to getting some shut eye, ranging from comfortable passenger seats to dedicated sleeping areas known as bunks. This allows them to recharge their energy so they can continue to ensure the safety of our skies. It’s fascinating how they manage to balance their responsibilities with taking care of their own well being. So next time you’re on a plane, you can rest assured that the pilots have had some quality rest to keep them alert and focused.”

Since the captain shared the video on Instagram, it has gone viral and garnered over 63,000 views.

Reacting to the clip, a user wrote, “My claustrophobia says no.”

Another shocking question asked, “They sleep? New fear unlocked.”

An individual clarified, “They sleep only on long flights and this room is available only in big aircraft.”

Another wrote, “First class has better couches than pilots.”

“I always thought on long flights they put the plane on autopilot and took turns sleeping. One pilot remaining awake in shifts,” a comment read.

A user shared, “I thought they slept in their seats like we do on road trips.”

While it’s common knowledge that not both pilots sleep simultaneously, an alarming incident in January raised eyebrows. Indonesia’s transport ministry had initiated an investigation when both pilots of Batik Air decided to sleep for 28 minutes during a flight from Kendari to Jakarta. This caused navigational errors as the aircraft turned from its correct flight path. Fortunately, the 153 passengers and four flight attendants on board remained unharmed and the aircraft wasn’t damaged. The flight was on air for two hours and 35 minutes and landed safely in Jakarta.
