In a heartwarming initiative in Jharkhand’s Ranchi, Lakshmi Gope, a seasoned expert in sewing and embroidery, is offering free training to girls. This initiative not only provides comprehensive training in sewing but also includes accommodation and meals for the duration of the program. The 64-year-old woman shared her motivation behind this noble endeavor, saying there was a time when she supported her household through sewing and embroidery, and now, with her children settled, she wanted to use her time to empower young girls.
The training spans six months, during which participants become proficient in various aspects of sewing and embroidery. I train the girls for six months, teaching them everything from blouses and lehengas to salwar suits and more, Lakshmi explained. Classes, held daily for three hours, are designed to equip participants with practical skills for self-sufficiency.
According to Lakshmi, sewing is a skill that empowers women to become financially independent. Many women in difficult circumstances come to her. Unable to afford training elsewhere, they find support with her, she said. Her initiative has already transformed the lives of over 500 girls, with 10 currently undergoing training.
Beyond training, Lakshmi offers a supportive environment where girls receive not just education but also lodging and meals. Some girls who lack a support system live with me during the training. I provide them with food and accommodation, she added.
Reflecting on her journey, Lakshmi expressed gratitude for her financial stability, which allows her to fund this initiative. My children support me financially now, enabling me to pursue this passion and stay active, she said.
