It felt like a déjà vu moment for Indian cricket fans. Just a mere three months ago, the Rohit Sharma-led Team India charged into the 2023 ODI World Cup final with an unbeaten streak, igniting hopes that the nation’s prolonged ICC trophy drought might finally come to an end. However, their hopes were dashed as Pat Cummins and his squad clinched the title, marking Australia’s unprecedented sixth win.
Fast forward to Sunday, and the scene seemed eerily familiar as the young Indian team, riding high on an undefeated streak, faced off against Australia in the 2024 Under-19 World Cup final in Benoni, a match billed as a chance for redemption, or so they thought.
Fuelled by a resilient 66-run partnership between Harjas Singh and Ryan Hicks, coupled with Oliver Peake’s grit in the final overs, Australia set a daunting target of 254 runs – the highest-ever first-innings total in a youth World Cup final, leaving Indian fans reeling. The challenge seemed insurmountable for the Uday Saharan-led side, especially on a pitch offering pace and movement, making an Australian victory almost inevitable.

As for the match itself, India’s pursuit began in disarray, losing four wickets within the initial 20 overs, including key batsmen Musheer Khan, Uday Saharan, and Sachin Dhas, pillars of their tournament run. Australia capitalised on the momentum, claiming four more wickets between overs 21-32. Despite a valiant effort from Abhishek Murugan towards the end, an Australian triumph seemed inevitable, as India faltered, folding for 174 runs in 43.5 overs.
With the resounding 79-run defeat at Willowmoore Park, India now tally a hat-trick of losses against Australia in ICC tournament finals – spanning the 2023 WTC Final, ODI World Cup, and now the U19 World Cup.
As frustration mounted, every Indian cricket supporter couldn’t help but scream, “Stop it Australia, haven’t you taken enough from us already?”
