In recent years, the discourse surrounding stress and its triggers has garnered significant attention in prevailing societal conversations. With an increasing recognition of the impact of stress on both physical and mental well-being, individuals, communities, and healthcare professionals alike have engaged in a nuanced exploration of the multifaceted factors contributing to stress in contemporary life. Work-related pressures, financial concerns, social expectations, and the constant connectivity facilitated by digital platforms are among the myriad factors discussed in the context of stress. Additionally, the global events of the past few years, such as the ongoing pandemic, have further intensified these conversations, emphasising the need for holistic approaches to stress management.
Recently, a video clip of an interview of the founder and former president and CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, talking about stress management has gone viral.
In this video, he said, “Stress primarily comes from not taking action over something that you can have some control over. So if I find that some particular thing is causing me to have stress, that’s a warning flag for me; what it means is, there’s something that I haven’t completely identified perhaps in my conscious mind, that is bothering me, and I haven’t yet taken any action on it. I find, as soon as I identify it, and make the first phone call or send up the first email message or whatever it is that we’re going to do to start to address the situation, even if it’s not solved, the mere fact that we’re addressing it dramatically reduces any stress that might come from it. So stress comes from ignoring things that you shouldn’t be ignoring, I think in large part.”
He further went on to say that people perceive stress in a wrong manner. He said that stress doesn’t come from hard work. “For example, you know you can be working incredibly hard and loving it. Likewise, you can be out of work and incredibly stressed over that. If you use that as an analogy. If you are out of work but you are going through a disciplined approach of giving job interviews and finding remedy to the situation, you’ll be a lot less stressed than just worrying about it and doing nothing,” Bezos added.
