While the visual appeal of subdued lighting is undeniable while dining, it is a challenge for diners trying to read the menu.

A lot of restaurants and fine dining places have chosen the trope of dim lighting to create a sophisticated atmosphere. A popular US-based food service equipment and supplies company, Boelter, on their website, explains that a considerable number of upscale restaurants deliberately choose a subdued lighting scheme to cultivate an air of refinement and intimacy. The soft radiance emanating from dim lights is strategically employed to contribute to an elegant atmosphere, thereby laying the groundwork for what is hoped to be a memorable dining experience. However, this deliberate aesthetic choice comes at a price.

While the visual appeal of subdued lighting is undeniable, it introduces a challenge for diners attempting to fully read the intricate details of the menu. The internet has stumbled upon a recent incident that serves as an example of the potential drawbacks of dining under such dimly lit conditions.

A video, which quickly went viral on Instagram, shows an influencer talking about her visit to a purportedly fancy restaurant with her Indian parents. The short clip showcased a woman using the flashlight feature on her phone to assist the man seated beside her in reading the menu. The accompanying caption added a touch of humor to the situation, stating, “Need this kinda confidence in my life. The highlight is my mom supporting him with that flashlight.”

This viral video has prompted an outpouring of comments from users who voiced their criticism of the restaurant’s choice of low lighting, deeming it a difficulty for customers attempting to go through the menu. Many resonated with the struggles faced by the Indian couple and questioned the reasoning behind restaurants opting for such dim lighting.

A user, drawing from their firsthand experience in the hospitality industry, shared a perspective, stating, “I have worked in hospitality, and I simply do not understand the concept of low lighting while eating. You need to see your food clearly before eating.”

Another expressed a similar sentiment, questioning the rationale behind maintaining such dim lighting: “What’s wrong with this? Why keep the light so dim? People can’t even read it.”

A person playfully suggested that the mother in the video was subtly urging the restaurant staff to brighten their lights, while others speculatively joked that the restaurant’s motive might be an attempt to “save electricity bills.”

“I keep my phone’s torch on until I finish my food because I want to see my food clearly,” wrote a user.
