Pilot Helps Deliver 'Sky Baby' Mid-flight After Woman Goes In Labour
Determined to take charge, he retrieved instructions on safe baby delivery from his cell phone and successfully assisted in the mid-air birth while thousands of feet above the ground.

Normally, an emergency mid-air flight situation would instigate panic among passengers, but a recent VietJet flight from Taipei, Taiwan to Bangkok encountered a very different kind of emergency—one that culminated in joy and appreciation. Captain Jakarin Sararnrakskul, already lauded for his piloting skills, now boasts another remarkable feat: assisting in delivering a baby mid-flight.

As reported by Viral Press, Captain Jakarin Sararnrakskul left the cockpit upon learning that a woman was experiencing labour pains in one of the aircraft’s restrooms. Hastening to the expectant mother, he discovered she was in active labour, leaving his female co-pilot in charge of piloting the aircraft. Despite lacking any medical experience, Sararnrakskul addressed the passengers and inquired if there was a doctor on board. Unfortunately, there were no doctors among the passengers that day. Determined to take charge, Sararnrakskul retrieved instructions on safe baby delivery from his cell phone and successfully assisted in the mid-air birth while thousands of feet above the ground.

Passengers were thrilled to witness their flight captain cradling a healthy newborn shortly after the delivery. Despite his 18-year career as a pilot, Sararnrakskul admitted to Viral Press that he had never before delivered a baby. Upon landing in Bangkok, Thailand, paramedics promptly attended to the mother and child, both reported to be in good health. The crew affectionately nicknamed the baby Sky.

A 2020 study by the International Society of Travel Medicine revealed that between 1929 and 2018, 74 children were delivered aboard commercial flights, with only three not surviving. While most pregnant women can travel safely, as stated by the NHS, consulting with a doctor or midwife before air travel is advisable.
