In a welcome achievement for the firefighters, as many as ten of them from the All India Fire Service Sports Control Board have bagged 21 medals, including eight gold, at the 15th World Fire Fighter Games held in Aalborg, Denmark this month. The medals were won in relay race, hurdle race, tug of war, wrestling, long jump, badminton and chess among other games, senior officials said.
The games were held from September 7 to 14. A team of top 10 players from fire departments across India was shortlisted and sent for the event. These players have won 21 medals including eight golds, 11 silver and 2 bronze medals, officials said.
Director of Delhi Fire Service, Atul Garg, who felicitated all the players upon their return to India on Tuesday, said these players were selected based on their trials. “We are glad our contingent bagged 21 medals and we believe our men will perform even better in the future games meets,” the director said.
Officials said, fireman Mariyappan from Tamil Nadu performed best in the team and won four gold medals in 200, 400, 800 and 1500 meters race. Leading fireman from Delhi Sharad Kumar Tewatia won gold medal in 4×100 meters relay race, silver medals in long jump, in badminton singles and doubles both and a bronze medal in the tug of war.
Other than these, fire operator Neeraj Kumar from Delhi won a gold in 10,000 meters and a bronze in the tug of war. Fire operator Praveen Kumar from Delhi won silver medals in wrestling Greeco Roman and in wrestling freestyle along with a bronze medal in tug of war. Fireman Jaidev also won silver medals in 10,000 meters race, in 3,000 meters hurdles and a bronze medal in 5000 meters race.
Officials said that fireman Dharmendra Pratap Singh from Uttar Pradesh won gold medals in 400 meters race and 100×4 relay race while silver medals in 100 and 200 meters race. Fireman Vishu Mor from Chandigarh won a gold medal in wrestling Greeco Roman, a silver medal in wrestling freestyle and a bronze in tug of war. Fireman Deepak Patkar from Karnataka won silver medals in badminton doubles and chess, they said.
In addition, Anand Pratap Singh from UP won four gold medals, Jitender Yadav from UP won one gold, two silver and one bronze medals in the aforesaid event, and Kallum Mammu of Andaman & Nicobar won two gold medals, one silver medal.
All the ten players were sent to the World Fire Fighter Games held in Denmark and the All India Fire Service Sports Control Board arranged their stay. The felicitation ceremony was also attended by deputy chief of fire S.K. Dua, S.K. Tomar, Madhab Kumar Chattopadhyay, divisional officer Rajendra Atwal and assistant divisional officer Ravinder Singh among others.
