In a bizarre incident in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, a thief fell asleep while attempting to rob a house. According to reports, the thief entered the house heavily drunk. After scrabbling through the premises and completing his crime, he switched on the air conditioner to take a break. Little did he know that he would doze off, only to be woken up by the police in the morning.
The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday when the thief entered the house located in Sector 20 of Lucknow’s Indiranagar. According to a report in India Today, the locked house belonged to Dr Sunil Pandey. He is posted in Varanasi and was away at the time of the incident.
Taking advantage of the situation, the thief barged into the house and was almost successful until he decided to sleep over. It was the next morning when Pandey’s neighbours found the front door suspiciously ajar and peeped in to find the ransacked house and a man sleeping. They immediately alerted the police, who nabbed the thief with the stolen goods.
The accused has been arrested and charged with IPC Section 379A for theft. According to the police, he broke into the cupboards to find cash. He even tried stealing off the washbasin, gas cylinder and water pump but slept off before that.
Thief Falls Asleep Whole Robbing
This isn’t the first time such an incident has come to light. In 2020, a similar case was reported in Andhra Pradesh, where a 21-year-old man couldn’t resist falling asleep under an air conditioner. According to reports, the thief entered an unlocked house late at night intending to steal money. However, he made the mistake of sleeping on the job.
Thinking that he would just take a power nap before leaving with the loot, the thief slept under the house owner’s cot and woke up much later. The owner, after hearing his snores, was alerted. He then called the police.
Meanwhile, another similar instance was reported from Thailand, where a burglar’s quick nap turned into a long-relaxed sleep, thus getting caught.
