US Woman Shares Ordeal Of Getting Hospitalised With Dengue While Backpacking In Thailand
The woman fell seriously ill while backpacking around Thailand with her husband.

Mosquito-borne disease is quite concerning worldwide nowadays. You might be aware that the number of people dying from mosquitoes is high. People take mosquitoes very lightly, but they do not understand that they can cause serious harm to them. In the same vein, a backpacker named Paisley Peach has revealed her terrifying ordeal of feeling like she was “about to die” after catching dengue fever in Thailand. Peach and her husband Julian De Prince were exploring the southeast Asian country when they were attacked by an army of mosquitoes. According to the report, the duo fell ill with high fevers, but Paisley’s condition worsened. She was rushed to the nearest hospital after collapsing in her bathroom.

She now regrets ‘not wearing insect spray’ and vowed to get vaccinated against the virus before travelling again. The burlesque performer from Boulder, Colorado, said, “I’ve never been hospitalised in my life – but with dengue, I thought I was about to die.”

Both of them had been touring Thailand in September last year, aiming to explore as much as possible before starting a family. She had applied tea tree oil to avoid the effects of mosquitoes, but the mosquitoes bit her badly. Following the course of events, the couple woke up with high fevers on October 3 and thought they must have been bitten by the same mosquito. “I tried taking a COVID test, but it came up negative,” she added.

Suffering from “really, really bad” body aches, they decided to abandon their hostel for a remote bungalow booked via AirBnB, which they had to take a water taxi to get to. While Julian started slowly getting better, she began to feel worse and even struggled to eat.

“I couldn’t sleep – I was in so much pain. I felt like all my bones were breaking, and my head felt like it was going to explode. Then there was this really bad pain behind my eyes – every time I drank water, I’d vomit. My skin was really warm and blotchy, and I couldn’t keep track of my temperature,” she added.

The situation worsened when she collapsed in the bathroom and went “fully unconscious from standing,” according to Julian. “Something was very, very wrong. We went straight to the nearby hospital. The doctor took some blood, came back and told me I had dengue,” she said.

Doctors told her that her blood platelet count was dangerously low, at only 40,000, considerably below the typical range of 150,000 to 400,000. Paisley said, “They told me I needed to be admitted. By day three, when I was discharged, I was able to eat plain rice and bites of mashed potato.” She further advised people to get vaccinated and use mosquito repellent creams to avoid such a situation. “Always get vaccinated, and don’t be afraid of wearing bug spray,” she added.
