Cairo: Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Tuesday vowed to swiftly make tougher laws against terrorists, a day after the assassination of the country's top prosecutor.

Sisi's comments came following the military funeral of the Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat who was killed by a car bomb on Monday.

"Criminal laws will be amended within days to confront the developments we are facing," the president said. "We will implement judicial sentences. Life in prison and death sentences will be put into effect as soon as possible," the president added referring to the sentences handed down to Muslim Brotherhood leaders recently.

The funeral here was attended by top and high profile political figures and was aired on TV. "The prosecutor general is Egypt's voice and assassinating him means silencing Egypt. But no one can silence Egypt," Sisi told reporters following the funeral.

Egypt has declared Tuesday as an official holiday to mark the second anniversary of the June 30 ouster of Islamist ex-president Mohamed Morsi by the army.

However, a statement by the presidency said that celebrations will be cancelled as the country mourns the death of Barakat.

"Egypt has lost a great judicial figure who has shown dedication to work and commitment to the ethics of the noble judicial profession," the statement said.

The 65-year-old prosecutor general died of his injuries following a bomb attack that targeted his convoy in Cairo. At least nine people, including two drivers and five members of the security forces, were also injured in the attack.

Judge Zakaria Abd El-Aziz Osman has been appointed as Egypt's acting prosecutor-general following the assassination of Barakat, a judicial source said.
