An under-trial man in France who allegedly drugged his wife several times and raped her as well as arranged for dozens of other men to rape her led twin lives as a ‘caring’ family man and a ‘highly dangerous’ sexual deviant, a court heard.
The defendant, identified as 71-year-old Dominique Pélicot, allegedly invited strangers he met online at home to rape his wife in Mazan, southern France, over nine years.
The woman was so heavily tranquilised that she was never aware of the repeated abuse, her counsel claimed. They revealed that Pélicot would secretly sauce up her dinner with high-dose anxiety-reducing drugs to make her unconscious after going to sleep.
Police identified at least 92 rapes committed by 72 men. The authorities caught and charged 50 of them who are now facing trial alongside the husband. Most of the strangers had backgrounds as civil servants, paramedics, prison guards and truck drivers, claimed reports.
Husband Showed Signs of ‘Paraphilic Deviance’
A court in the nearby city of Avignon on Monday heard from psychiatrists who claimed to have evaluated Pélicot, a retired electrician. Several reports claimed that he showed signs of ‘paraphilic deviance’ in which he had a strong desire to commit sexual acts on non-consenting victims.
Medically, Paraphilia proves to be a condition where a person’s sexual gratification depends on extreme sexual behaviour towards fulfilling the desires.
The 71-year-old husband reportedly revealed during interrogation that he enjoyed ‘pleasure in seeing his wife touched by strangers.’ The experts compared him to Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, stating that he had a ‘twin character’ allowing him to act like a ‘family man’ in the day.
