The Indian embassy in Sweden and Latvia Saturday said that they are in touch with authorities in Latvia after a report of an Indian student drowning to death in a canal emerged.

“The Embassy is in regular contact with Latvian authorities regarding the unfortunate incident of suspected drowning of an Indian student in Riga. We remain in touch with the family and will continue to extend all possible help,” the embassy said in a statement.
Latvian news website lsm.lv said the student who died is from Kerala and is named Albin Shinto. It said that the incident happened on July 18 citing his friend and eyewitness Arhik Haries, who told the news outlet that he and Albin and five friends swam in the canal.
He told the news outlet that two of his friends were almost able to pull him out of the water but ultimately failed to save him.
A passing fisherman then helped the four others save themselves.
Haries told the outlet that cops along with divers were quick to arrive at the scene and searched the waters for “two to three hours”.
They, however, could not find the body and said search will resume on Monday due to lack of resources.
