“An experienced Russian powerlifter tragically passed out and died after lifting just 80kg (less than 200lbs) at a strongman contest in Tyumen, Russia. He leaves behind a wife and child,” Nawfal wrote in the post accompanying the video.
In his post he wrote that the incident has sparked discussions on the risks involved in competitive lifting.
Strongman is a term that is used to describe a participant who takes part in strength athletics. Powerlifters necessarily do not have to be strongmen.
In strength athletics, strongman athletes participate in competitions that involve lifting, carrying, pulling, and pushing heavy objects.
Atlas stones, log press, deadlift, farmer’s walk, truck pull, yoke carry, and tire flip are examples of strength athletics events.
“Powerlifting has never been a sport of health. You have individuals that are larger than average to begin with which is NOT optimal for health and longevity,” a person commented beneath the video.
“Consuming insane amounts of food, steroids oftentimes abusing steroids, there are very few powerlifters who actually maintain a quality lean physique and are simply just bloated water logged, putting their bodies through extreme stress for years, decades. So of course this is not a healthy sport, it never has been,” the person said.
Another commentator appeared to counter the argument: “That’s not true. Most strongmen live long and stay strong for years. Deaths are rare in the sport”.
