Former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Tuesday recounted his assassination attempt in vivid detail during a high-profile interview with X’s owner Elon Musk and spoke about how surviving the attack has deepened his faith.
“You know, I’m a believer. Now I’m more of a believer, I think. A lot of great people have said that to me. It was amazing that I happened to be turned just at that perfect angle,” Trump said.
Calling the attack a miracle, he added, “For those who don’t believe in God, I think we all need to start thinking about that.”
‘A hard hit’
During the interview, when Musk asked him about the shooting, Trump described it as a “hard hit.”
“It was a hard hit. It was very, I guess you would say, surreal, but it wasn’t surreal… I knew immediately that it was a bullet,” Trump remarked.
He emphasised the gravity of the situation by adding, “If I had not turned my head, I would not be talking to you right now — as much as I like you.”
Trump further quipped that the experience was “not pleasant” and joked about the surprising amount of blood he lost, saying, “The ear is a very bloody place if you’re going to get hit, but in this case it was probably the best alternative you could think about because it went at the right angle.”
Trump also criticised the lack of security coordination, saying, “Everybody understands that building should have been covered.”
The interview between Trump and Musk was delayed by over 40 minutes due to a cyberattack that disrupted the link hosting the conversation on X.
The conversation between the two men was aimed at reviving Trump’s faltering campaign, which has struggled since Biden withdrew from the race.
The meeting also highlighted the evolving relationship between Trump and Musk, two of the world’s most powerful men, who have shifted from being rivals to unexpected allies throughout the election season.
