World Refugee Day: These 7 Facts Will Move You To Tears

World Refugee Day has been observed every year on June 20 after it was adopted in December 2000 by the United Nations General Assembly.

According to the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention, a refugee is someone who fled his or her home and country owing to “a well-founded fear of persecution because of his/her race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion".

Every year on this day, the United Nations Refugee Agency holds several events to draw the world's attention to the status of refugees. And every year the United Nations announces a theme for the day. This year's theme is ‘We stand together #WithRefugees’ and with all those forced to flee their lands.

This year the world leaders have decided that the global public stands with refugees, and it will launch its ‘WithRefugees’ petition on June 20 to send a message to governments that they must work together and do their fair share for refugees.
